Installing SQL Server 2012

To start the installation, simply clicks on the setup.exe file. Or, if you install from a DVD, the auto-run function will load the following setup screen. From the left-side panel, select Installation.

 To install a stand-alone copy of SQL Server, select the first option from the right-side panel.

The SQL Setup will perform several Checks on your server’s supporting files and components during the SQL Setup. Once completed the Check, the results will show on above the status bar. For details of the Supporting Files and Requirements, clicks on the [Show Details] button to see what components are missing or failed the Check.

For this Setup Support Rules Checks, I list down each of the requirement on the following table.

Setup AdministrationChecks whether the account running SQL Server Setup has administrator rights on the computer.
Setup account privilegesChecks whether the account that is running SQL Server Setup has the right to back up files and directories, the right to manage auditing and the security log and the right to debug programs.
Restart computerChecks if a pending computer restart is required. A pending restart can cause Setup to fail.
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) serviceChecks whether the WMI service is started and running on the computer.
Consistency validation for SQL Server registry keysChecks if the SQL Server registry keys are consistent.
Long path names to files on SQL Server installation mediaChecks whether the SQL Server installation media is too long.
SQL Server Setup Product IncompatibilityChecks whether the current version of SQL Server is compatible with a later installed version.
.NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 update for Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 (KB958488)This rule determines whether the computer has the required update package for .NET Framework 2.0 or .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 that is needed for a successful installation of Visual Studio components that are included in SQL Server.

If there any Rules that failed the Check, resolve the issue and re-scan again. All Rules must passed before proceed the installation.

If you are installing the SQL Server with an evaluation copy, you should see the screen below, with the Evaluation option selected.

However, if you are installing the SQL Server from a MVL or Retail copy, you should see the Product Key is being entered. The SQL Server 2012 Product Key is already embedded with the installation media. Click [Next] to proceed.

On the License Terms screen, read through the Microsoft Software License Terms and check to accept the License Terms. Otherwise, the setup will not proceed to next screen.

The SQL Server Setup will check your server for Microsoft Update KB2793634. This update is essential for SQL Server 2012 SP1 installation. Clicks [Next] to proceed. The Setup will download and install the update before proceeding to next setup.

After completed the update installation, SQL Setup will perform a second round of Check for supporting files and components. Table below lists the Checks and Requirement.

Fusion Active Template Library (ATL)Checks if a computer restart is required because of broken fusion ATL. A pending restart can cause SQL Server Setup to fail.
Previous releases of SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence Development StudioChecks if any of SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence Development Studio installation exists.
No SxS install with SQL Server “Denali” CTP0This rule determines whether an instance of SQL Server “Denali” CTP0 exists.
Consistency validation for SQL Server registry keysChecks if the SQL Server registry keys are consistent.
Computer domain controllerChecks whether the computer is a domain controller. Installing SQL Server 2012 on a domain controller is not recommended.
Microsoft .NET Application SecurityVerifies that the computer is connected to the Internet. When a Microsoft .NET application like Microsoft Management Studio starts, there may be a slight delay while the .NET security check validates a certificate.
Windows FirewallChecks whether the Windows Firewall is enabled.

If there any Rules that failed the Check, resolve the issue and re-scan again. All Rules must passed before proceed the installation. Warning message will not affect the SQL Setup.
